Be a better pet owner

Pets can add fun, companionship and a feeling of safety to our lives. So picking out, taking care of and keeping safe our ``best friend'' should be of the utmost importance.

Be a better pet owner with these tips from The Federal Citizen Information Center:

• Choosing a pet: Before adopting or purchasing any pet, you and your family should take a realistic look at the family lifestyle and discuss expectations and responsibilities.

• Kids and pets: The animals your child sees in the woods or parks may be cute to look at, but they can be dangerous and may carry diseases. Never adopt wild animals as pets or bring them home. Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if the animals appear to be friendly.

• Daily care: All animals require proper care and pet owners should be aware of any issues that relate to their specific animal. Remember that a little preventive care can go a long way to maintaining your pet's health.

• Travel: If you are planning to travel with your pet be sure to consult with your veterinarian. Some animals cannot withstand the rigors of travel due to illness, injury or temperament.

• Emergencies: Being prepared for an emergency is also important for our pets. A pet emergency supply kit should include identification and immunization records, an ample supply of food and water and a picture of you and your pet together.
