Prep your pet for spring!

Now that spring has officially sprung, all of us — including our pets — are itching to get outside and PLAY! However, in addition to the promise of fun-in-the-sun activities, warmer weather, blooming plants and hatching "wildlife" can also create potential hazards for our furry friends.

Here are a few things to keep in mind from the Iams Pet Wellness Council (IPWC) to help keep our pets healthy and safe:

  • Prevent heartworm: Heartworm is caused by mosquitoes and can be fatal for our pooches if left untreated. Spring is a major time for heartworm because mosquitoes tend to be more active. The good news is that there are many preventative treatments available. Check with your vet to find out which one is right for your pet.
  • Fend off fleas and ticks: Fleas and tickets may be tiny but they can wreak mighty havoc once they attach themselves to a host. To help prevent fleas and ticks, it's best to apply a repellent directly to all outdoor pets' coats throughout the early spring months.
  • Protect pets from toxins: Remember that most lawn and garden fertilizers and pesticides are toxic to pets. After applying these chemicals, always carefully follow manufacturer instructions regarding how long you should wait before allowing your pet to roam free in the effected areas.
  • Alleviate allergies: Just like people, pets can be susceptible to seasonal allergies. Constant paw licking, body rubbing, excessive scratching, hair loss, odors, skin rashes and a “flaky” or “greasy” feeling coat are all possible symptoms. Talk to your vet about ways you can help soothe your tormented pet.
