Basic items to keep in pet emergency kit

Posted on September 30, 2009 11:04

Q: What standard items should I keep in a pet emergency kit at home and in the car? I have the usual elastic bandages and gauze, tweezers, tic pickers and blanket; and in my car, a spare leash and a small vacuum-sealed pack of treats (to lure a dog away from danger). What am I missing that a veterinarian would suggest?

A: Always contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet is injured or ill. First aid is not a substitute for veterinary treatment. However, practicing basic first aid could help save your pet's life. Your first aid kit should include the following:

-- A hard copy of your veterinarian's and veterinary clinic's phone numbers. Save the numbers in your cell phone, too.

-- Towels to clean wounds or wrap the pet. Towels can also be used to cover an animal's head. Do not use in cases of vomiting.

-- A 2-inch roll of gauze to wrap wounds or muzzle an animal. Animals in pain may bite.

-- Adhesive tape in 1- and 2-inch widths.

-- Nonstick bandages (e.g., Telfa pads).

-- Activated charcoal. But do not treat an animal for poisoning without first getting the advice of your veterinarian or poison control.

-- Bulb syringe

-- Stretcher to use as a flat transport surface (board, floor mat)

-- Ice pack

-- Rectal thermometer

-- Saline wash in a squirt bottle

-- Latex gloves

-- Antibiotic ointment, iodine swabs

-- Scissors
