Should you use flea/tick medications from the vet?

Q: I would like to know your feelings about using flea and tick medications from the veterinarian.

We got the K9 Advantix for our dog, but haven't put it on. I don't like the idea of chemicals but don't want a chance of my pet contracting Lyme disease.

A: With two more months to deal with the pesky critters, your question is well timed.

Topical flea and tick medications came under great scrutiny in spring when the Environmental Protection Agency began investigating a 53 percent increase in adverse effects associated with these and other EPA-regulated preventatives, including sprays, collars and shampoos.

The increases were largely attributed to dozens of new, cheaper brands available at drug and grocery stores, as well as misapplication by owners. For example, several cats became ill when owners used ''dog'' products on them. Topical preventatives should never be used on puppies or kittens, and products specifically formulated for dogs and cats should be used accordingly.

I believe vet-recommended brands to be reasonably safe. Carefully follow the product label directions and apply only the amount indicated for the size of the pet being treated. Be cognizant of age restrictions and monitor your pet for any side effects.

Alarming online blogs embellish the EPA findings, some claiming flea preventatives cause premature death, etc. My last two Newfies were on Frontline their entire adult lives, and both lived to age 13.

I'm not a fan of chemicals either, but have witnessed the agony pets suffer from flea/tick infestations. When used properly under the guidance of a veterinarian, I believe the benefits outweigh the risks.
