Britons put pet's health ahead of their own, survey finds

Britain's reputation as a nation of animal lovers has been underlined by a new survey showing that many dog and cat owners would make personal sacrifices to ensure their pet is healthy.

Indeed, the poll by Tesco Bank found that almost half (46 per cent) of this group have insurance for their four-legged friends, while only 36 per cent have health cover for themselves.

If their dog or cat was in need of treatment, 47 per cent of respondents said they would cut back on nights out to pay for it and another 29 per cent would consider scrapping their summer holiday.

More than one in five (21 per cent) would cancel their gym membership to guarantee they could afford the best for their moggy or pooch, while seven per cent would be prepared to sacrifice their own health insurance.

Veterinarian Dr Scott Miller said: "For many people, pets are seen as members of the family.

"Regular trips to the vet will ensure that any issues or illnesses are spotted early and can prevent costly bills in the event of major treatment being required."
