Traveling safely with your pet this summer

Travel tips from the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Summer has arrived and vacation planning is in full swing! Travelers with pets will need to plan ahead and consider a few things advance of take-off:

1. Make sure your pet is current with vaccinations.
2. Discuss the pros and cons of sedating your pet during flight.
3. Make sure to "reserve a seat" for your pet when you book your flight.
4. Book direct flights or avoid long layovers so that your pet can arrive quickly.
5. Check weather related restrictions when flying with your pet.
6. Feed your pet six to eight hours prior to flight time.
7. Make sure your pet is properly collared and has an identification tag.

"Traveling with your pet can be an enjoyable experience, however there are several vital steps to take to ensure your pet’s health when traveling," said Dr. Jean Duddy of Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. "A pet owner’s checklist should include making sure that the pet is up to date on all vaccinations (even at your destination). If you are flying, you and your pet’s veterinarian should discuss the pros and cons of sedation before making a decision. Finally, since travel can be stressful on your pet, you should feed them six to eight hours prior to traveling long distances by car or flying. If at any time you feel that your trip will prove more harmful and less enjoyable to your pet, leave him or her at home under the watchful eye of a trusted pet sitter."
