More Dogs Testing Positive In Macomb County And Pontiac
All About Animals Rescue Inc. said it is seeing a significant increase in the number of parvovirus-positive dogs this year over last year. In addition, All About Animals said it is seeing a significant increase in positive heartworm tests. Typically the clinics would see one or two cases in a month, this year it is happening on a daily basis.
All About Animals said it is especially concerned about the spread of the parvovirus in dogs in the Pontiac area. Parvovirus is a viral infection that affects dogs, and especially puppies. It frequently causes death, but can be avoided with preventative vaccines.
Yearly heartworm testing and staying on heartworm preventative year round can prevent heartworm in dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.
"In the last few weeks, it has been heart wrenching to diagnose at lease one beloved pet every day with parvovirus or heartworm. It is especially difficult when it involves entire litters of puppies that are not likely to survive," said Amber Sitko, Roseville, Mich. president of All About Animals Rescue.
