An Introduction to Pet Medication

Posted on June 22, 2010 10:59

Medication use is growing every day. Men, women, and children alike are using more medication now than ever before. But medication is no longer limited to the people in a household. Medication is now being used for people's pets too.

Pet meds are an ever growing market and one that is becoming more complex.

The first thing you should know is that it is not unlike the process for human medication. Pets develop symptoms just like people. Perhaps it's a change in diet or a change in bowel movements, but when a pet is experiencing symptoms out of the ordinary, they can be taken to a doctor.

A veterinarian will see your pet and diagnose the problem and then make a decision on the kind of medication they need. There are two types of medication a doctor can prescribe. One is an over the counter medication. Perhaps it's a tick or flea remover or a medication to help improve joint and bone strength.

Second is a prescription medication. This is something like an antibiotic or eye drops. Ampicillin is a common antibiotic prescribed. These medications have to be ordered to a pharmacy and entered into a system. This is strictly because most pet medications that are prescribed can also be used by humans. If humans need a written prescription by a doctor, then so do their pets.

Generally speaking, prescription medication is often inexpensive for pets because they are given in such low quantities. The unfortunate part, however, is that most insurances do not cover for pets. If this is the case for your pet, you can ask the pharmacy if they have a discount program for the pets or you can look online for a place that may be able to help you get pet meds at a reasonable cost.
