Autumn Allergies Can Make Your Pets Miserable

Fall can be a problem time for pets. Ragweed and falling leaves can trigger allergies, making dogs itchy and miserable.
Lady has a problem. "She does it all the time, anywhere, anytime. If she's itchy, she'll just scratch herself," Rachel Rosenblatt said. "She scratches every hour of the day. She'll even scratch at midnight and wake my parents up."
Rosenblatt said her family's tried everything to relieve their Golden Retriever's scratching. "They keep putting her on pills and all these medicines and they had to shave her stomach to see what was the matter with her and nothing's helped her yet."
Lady's not alone. Many dogs suffer from seasonal allergies this time of year. Amber suffers with mild symptoms like runny eyes. Bella stays covered at all times to stop her scratching. And Henry the schnauzer has a severe skin infection. Veterinary dermatologist Dr. Heather Peikes treats the most difficult cases.
"I tend to see the ones that can't sleep, can't eat, are losing weight or keeping their owners up who are just completely miserable," Peikes said.
"I just feel horrible. There's nothing I can do to make him feel better," said Leslie Trachtenberg, Henry's owner. "She thinks it's allergies."
"Itching and scratching can be food, can be airborne allergies, flea allergies," Peikes said.
The vet recommends taking these steps to fight allergy symptoms:
- avoid freshly mowed grass
- add Omega 3 supplements to your dogs diet - flax seed, fish oil
- try antihistamies as prescribed by a vet
- wipe down paws after going outdoors
- bathe with gentle shampoo
Dr. Debra Jaliman is a Manhattan dermatologist who sees people, not pets. She couldn't believe it when her own dog Truffles couldn't stop scratching. Nothing worked, so she developed a mild shampoo to help him and other dogs.
"He stopped itching. He didn't have sensitive skin. His skin went back to normal color. His skin stopped peeling," she said.
And just because summer's over, don't forget about flea protection. "We don't see that many fleas in New York City but we definitely do this time of year," said Peikes.
Vaccines and stronger medications can be prescribed for dogs with more severe symptoms. All the proceeds from Dr. Jaliman's dog shampoo are donated to the Humane Society of New York.
