During flea treatment, maintain good personal hygiene for dogs, other pets and humans in your household. Don't feed your pet any rodents, uncooked meat or fish. Eliminate any dead fleas you find. Also, clean up stools daily to prevent re-infection.
Take precautions if animal has a serious medical condition. Sentinel has not been approved for use in pregnant or nursing dogs. Contact a veterinarian for recommendations.

Drug Doses
The sentinel heartworm drug product is sold in four different milbemycin oxime/lunfeuron strength levels in convenient color-coded packages: 2.3 mg/46 mg [red], 5.75 mg/115 mg [green], 11.5 mg/230 mg [yellow] and 23 mg/460 mg [white]. It is in tablet form only, available in artificial beef flavor.
Administration
These tablets are administered based on the dog's weight:
- 2.3 mg/46 mg for 2 to 10 pounds (1 to 4 kilograms)
- 5.75 mg/115 mg for 11 to 25 pounds (4 to 11 kilograms)
- 11.5 mg/230 mg for 26 to 50 pounds (11 to 23 kilograms)
- 23 mg/460 mg for 51 to 100 pounds (23 to 45 kilograms)
If your dog weighs more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms) ask your veterinarian what the proper combination of Sentinel flavor tablets is recommended.
How is Sentinel administered?
Sentinel for dogs should be administered during meals - either in the mouth or included with food portions.
How often should I give my dog Sentinel?
The American Heartworm Society encourages monthly administration for an entire year.
Can I combine Sentinel with Capstar?
Sentinel can be combined with Capstar (nitenpyram) for serious flea management - while Sentinel is good at killing flea eggs, Capstar is good at killing adult fleas fast.
Capstar would be administered once or twice a week with the 11.4 mg [blue] tablet being given to dogs from 2 to 25 pounds (1 to 11 kilograms) and the 57.0 mg [green] tablet being given to dogs more than 25 pounds (11 kilograms).
Testing
It is recommended to perform heartworm testing before treatment. Sentinel for dogs has been tested safely in more than 40 different breeds of dogs. Ask pharmacist or veterinarian if you have any questions.

Side effects are rare, but could include the following reactions:
anorexia, ataxia, convulsions, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation, pruritus, skin congestion, urticaria, vomiting and weakness.
Dogs might also itch to attempt to remove dead fleas.
