Revolution is a topical veterinary medication to control fleas, ticks, and certain intestinal parasites in dogs and cats.  The active ingredient in Revolution is selamectin, a macrocyclic lactone compound which comes as a yellow to colorless liquid in prepackaged single dose tubes.  It is applied directly to the hair between the shoulder blades of dogs age 6 weeks and greater and cats 8 weeks of age or more.

Revolution is used to kill and prevent fleas and ticks on dogs and cats along with treating mange and ear mites in dogs.  It prevents heartworms in dogs and cats and treats and controls round worms in cats along with preventing hook worms in cats.  The drug must be applied at monthly intervals to prevent worm infestations, especially in the case of heartworms in areas where mosquitoes are endemic.

Revolution is absorbed through the animal's skin where blood concentrations of selamectin prevent heartworm disease, and fight fleas, ticks, and parasitic worms.

Each tube of Revolution is formulated to provide a minimum of 2.7 mg/lb or 6 mg/kg of body weight of selamectin.  The tubes are packaged in dosages for animals from 5 pounds and under up to 130 pounds.  For dogs greater than 130 pounds a combination of two tubes equal to the appropriate weight strength is recommended.  Do not split a tube into two or more doses as this may result in too much or too little product being applied.

To apply, press the cap into the tube to break open the applicator.  Part the hair of the animal between the shoulder blades to expose the skin.  After removing the cap, apply all of the appropriate size tube on to the skin of the animal by squeezing the tube four or five times to empty it.  If you do not understand how to apply Revolution, ask your veterinarian to demonstrate.
