Although, Optimmune eye ointment is suitable to treat keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK) in most dogs, there are a few exceptions.  First, dogs with preexisting conditions such as, fungal or viral infections of the eye should not use Optimmune ophthalmic ointment until those conditions are treated first.  Second, those dogs allergic to cyclosporine should not use this product.  Finally, the safety of Optimmune in those dogs that are breeding, nursing their young or are pregnant has yet to be determined.  Inform your veterinarian if your dog has any of these conditions.

What is Optimmune?

Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, is the manufacturer of the drug Optimmune.  The active ingredient of Optimmune ophthalmic ointment is cyclosporine, which is used to reduce inflammation in the eye.  Other ingredients include: corn oil, lanolin oil, and petrolatum.  Typically, Opitimmune is used to treat eye inflammations in dogs, such eye conditions include: keratoconjunctivitis sicca (otherwise known as KCS or dry eye) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).  It assists and increases tear production in dogs, while at the same time decreases inflammation and irritation of the eye.

When Optimmune ophthalmic ointment is applied, the active ingredient ciclosporine assists the dog’s immune system and helps fight the diseases, which are attacking the immune system, in this case infections such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK).  When treating KCS and CSK, cyclosporine repairs damage to tear glands and increases the tear production in dogs.

Before applying Optimmune to a dog’s eye, be sure to thoroughly clean your own hands and remove any debris, which may be around the dog’s eye with a nonirritating solution.  Apply a ¼ of an inch strip of the Optimmune eye ointment to the inner part of the dog’s lower eye lid every twelve hours.  If possible try and hold your dog’s eyelid shut and gently rub the eyelid to circulate the ointment throughout the eye.  Caution should be taken while applying the ointment as it is sterile.  If the tube and cap of the medicated ointment become contaminated it can cause further infections to the eye.  Although this medication is for use in all dogs, always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian.
