What is Epakitin?

Epakitin is a type of nutritional supplement that is designed to support healthy kidney function and slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease.  It comes in powder form, and it can be used for cats and dogs.  Epakitin powder nutritional supplements are manufactured by VĂ©toquinol USA, and the supplement's primary ingredients include chitosa, lactose, calcium carbonate, and hydrolyzed soy protein.  It does not require a prescription from a veterinarian.  The supplement has a palatable flavor, so it most dogs and cats will take it willingly.

What is Epakitin used for?

Kidney disease is one of the most common causes of death among dogs and cats.  Though there is no cure, the ingredients in Epakitin can help maintain proper kidney function in healthy animals, and it can help to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.

How does Epakitin work?

The main ingredient in Epakitin powder is chitosan.  This is a type of natural polysaccharide that is derived naturally from the shells of crab and shrimp.  Chitosan works to naturally bond phosphorus, thereby reducing the amount of phosphorus that is absorbed from the intestines.  Studies have also proven that chitosan helps to reduce urea and creatinine as well as calcium absorption.  As a result of these limitations, damage done to the kidneys is reduced which can prevent or slow the progression of chronic renal (kidney) disease.  When damage to the kidneys is reduced, animals tend to have longer life expectancies.

Each package of Epakitin powder comes with a scoop.  When level, this scoop holds exactly 1 gram of the Epakitin supplement.  The dosage for Epakitin for cats and Epakitin for dogs is the same.  The recommended dosage is 1 gram per 11 pounds of body weight twice a day.  The supplement should be mixed with food, and it should be given once in the morning and once in the evening.
