Denosyl SD Storage

As with any medication, precautions should be in place to ensure the safety and health of dogs or cats who may be taking Denosyl/Denosyl SD.  One of the main concerns regarding this medication is how it is administered.  There is a danger of the tablet becoming lodged in the throat if Denosyl is given without water.  If the tablet is not able to pass through to the stomach the efficacy of the medication will drop due to the inability of proper absorption.

What Is Denosyl?

Denosyl/Denosyl SD pet medication is a nutritional supplement available from your veterinarian for both dogs and cats.  Denosyl contains the active ingredient S-adenosylmethionine, or commonly referred to as SAM-e.  This naturally occurring molecule helps to stabilize the levels of glutathione, which is a vital antioxidant that is produced in the liver.  The overall health of the liver is important in maintaining a healthy and vibrant pet.

Uses For Denosyl

There are a number of potential reasons for liver problems in dogs and cats.  Organic dysfunction such as a genetic disease, acute illness or injury to the liver, and age-related problems have a direct impact on a pet's liver health.  When the liver is not functioning at its proper optimal level, the production of SAM-e is dramatically slowed.  When a dog or cat has low levels of SAM-e in their bodies, various physical maladies may result.

The recommendation for the use of Denosyl or Denosyl SD pet medication by your dog or cat's veterinarian may be given in order to enhance the pet's health by bringing the levels of SAM-e back up to an optimal level.  When liver compounds are at peak levels, the organ's cells are able to repair and regenerate.  This will greatly improve your pet's health and quality of life.

How Does Denosyl Work?

Denosyl/Denosyl SD works by increasing the amount of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-e) that a dog or cat's liver would normally produce when liver function is stable.  This chemical compound is metabolized by the body and improves brain function and general liver health.

Depending upon the size of the cat or dog, Denosyl tablets and chewables are administered at the following dosages:

The dosage of Denosyl for cats and small dogs is 90 mg daily in tablet form.  The chewable dose for cats and small dogs is one-fourth to one tablet per day, depending upon the weight of the animal.  For medium-sized dogs, the Denosyl dosage is 225 mg once daily.  Chewable dosing is one-half to two and one-half tablets per day.  Large breed dogs should be administered up to 425 mg daily in tablet form or three to four chewable tablets daily.

Denosyl/Denosyl administration should be done on an empty stomach for maximum absorption of the medication, preferably at least one hour prior to feeding.  For larger pets, the doses can be divided and administered at both morning and evening to enhance its effectiveness.
