Before taking Cephalexin (Cephalexin) (Cephalexin (Cephalexin)), tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillins or other cephalosporins (e.g., cefpodoxime); or if you have any other allergies.

Before using Cephalexin (Cephalexin), tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (e.g., colitis).

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) may make you dizzy.  Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any activity that requires alertness.  Limit alcoholic beverages.

The liquid form of this product may contain sugar.  Caution is advised if you have diabetes.  Ask your doctor or pharmacist about using this product safely.

Kidney function declines as you grow older.  Cephalexin (Cephalexin) is removed by the kidneys.  Therefore, older adults may be at greater risk for side effects while using Cephalexin (Cephalexin).

During pregnancy, Cephalexin (Cephalexin) should be used only when clearly needed.  Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) passes into breast milk.  Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections.  Cephalexin (Cephalexin) is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic.  It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections.  It will not work for virus infections (e.g., common cold, flu).  Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

Take Cephalexin (Cephalexin) by mouth, usually every 6 or 12 hours or as directed by your doctor.  You may take this medicine with food if stomach upset occurs.

If you are using the suspension, shake the bottle well before each dose.  Measure the dose carefully using a special measuring device/spoon.  Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.  In children, the dose is also based on weight.

Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level.  Therefore, take Cephalexin (Cephalexin) at evenly spaced intervals.

Continue to take Cephalexin (Cephalexin) until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days.  Stopping the medication too early may result in a return of the infection.

Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Diarrhea, dizziness, headache, or stomach upset may occur.  If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Cephalexin (Cephalexin) because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.  Many people using Cephalexin (Cephalexin) do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes (e.g., agitation, confusion).

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: severe stomach/abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine, change in the amount of urine, new signs of infection (e.g., fever, persistent sore throat), easy bruising/bleeding.

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria.  This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped.  Tell your doctor immediately if you develop persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.  Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have any of these symptoms because these products may make them worse.

Use of Cephalexin (Cephalexin) for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection.  Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.

A very serious allergic reaction to Cephalexin (Cephalexin) is rare.  However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects.  If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

If you miss a dose of Cephalexin (Cephalexin), take it as soon as you remember.  If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  Do not double the dose to catch up.

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them.  Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Before using Cephalexin (Cephalexin), tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: vaccines that contain live bacteria (e.g., typhoid, BCG), metformin, probenecid.

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills.  This can result in pregnancy.  You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using Cephalexin (Cephalexin).  Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details.

Cephalexin (Cephalexin) may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including Coombs' test, certain urine glucose tests), possibly causing false test results.  Make sure laboratory personnel and all your doctors know you use Cephalexin (Cephalexin).

This document does not contain all possible interactions.  Therefore, before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all the products you use.  Keep a list of all your medications with you, and share the list with your doctor and pharmacist.
