This medication is for the treatment of pets only.  It is not intended for human use.  For maximum effectiveness, all pets in the household should be treated.  The pet’s outdoor and indoor environment should also be treated with an effective flea control product to help prevent continued infestations.

Capstar flea medication is an oral tablet used to control adult fleas that cause flea allergy dermatitis.  Capstar Tablets contain 11.4 or 57.o mg of nitenpyram, a compound that kills adult fleas.  Nitenpyram is in the chemical class nionicotinoids.

Capstar for dogs and cats is used to kill adult fleas present on the pet at the time of dosage.  It begins killing fleas within 30 minutes.  In studies, Capstar flea medication was more than 90% effective against adult fleas within 4 hours on dogs and within six hours on cats.  It is intended to provide rapid relief from fleas, and is best used in conjunction with Program Tablets for cats and dogs or Program Liquid for cats to prevent future infestations.  Capstar flea control will not control infestations in the pet’s environment.

The active ingredient in Capstar works by binding and inhibiting nicotinic acetycholine receptors in fleas.  Nitenpyram interrupts nerve transmission, leading to the death of adult fleas.  It does not inhibit acetylcholinesterase.

Capstar flea medication is safe for use on cats, kittens, dogs and puppies that weigh more than two pounds and are at least four weeks of age.  This medication is also safe for use in pregnant or nursing cats and dogs.  Animals must be weighed prior to use to ensure proper dosage.

One dose of Capstar should kill the adult fleas on the pet.  If reinfestation occurs, it is safe to give another dose once per day.  It may be necessary to retreat pets because immature fleas in the pet’s environment may cause a reinfestation.  Fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and military dermatitis in cats, and are known to carry other parasites including tapeworms.  Controlling flea infestations is important to pet health because of the numerous problems caused by or associated with these parasites.

Because fleas can reproduce on untreated pets in the household, perpetuating the infestation problem, it is important to treat all infested pets with Capstar flea control at the same time.

Administer Capstar according to the following directions:
Cats, kittens, dogs and puppies, 2 to 25 pounds give 1 tablet of Capstar Blue, 11.4 mg
Dogs 25.1 to 125 pounds, give 1 tablet of Capstar Green, 57.0 mg.

To administer Capstar, place the tablet directly into the pet’s mouth or hide it in food.  If the pill is hidden in the pet’s food, watch to be sure the tablet is swallowed.  It is safe to give a second tablet if it is not certain if the pet swallowed the first dosage.

Capstar is available in two strengths.  Capstar Blue tablets, 11.4 mg, are for use in dogs, puppies, cats and kittens weighing 2 to 25 pounds.  Capstar Green, 57.0 mg, is for use in dogs weighing more than 25 pounds.

Adverse reactions to Capstar tablets are rare.  Cats and dogs may begin to scratch themselves as fleas begin to die and fall away from their bodies.  This is not an allergic reaction.  The scratching is a reaction to the fleas, not the medication, and will subside.  Very rarely, this reaction may present in cats as signs of hyperactivity, panting, excessive grooming and vocalization.
