Are you concerned about your pet's welfare while you leave town for vacation?
If a friend or relative is going to take care of your pet, the Humane Society recommends that you ask that person to take your animal into his or her home since animals can get lonely when left alone. Make sure that your pet is comfortable with the temporary caretaker and his or her home especially if he or she has other pets in the home.
If you are hiring a pet sitter or boarding your pet at a kennel, you should check their references, according to the Humane Society. Consider interviewing the pet sitter and inspecting the kennel. Your veterinarian can often be a resource to help you find a sitter or kennel.
Whatever option you choose, your pet should be up-to-date on all vaccinations and in sound health.
Pets should also have familiar toys, beds and food with them to provide comfort in a strange situation.
You should leave the kennel or pet sitter a telephone number where you can be reached, in addition to contact information for your veterinarian's office and information about medical or dietary needs.
If your pet is comfortable with the person you choose, you will be more comfortable as well.
